“Minors are also held at the repatriation center in Rome. This is not allowed by law. The government is violating the rights of minors.” With regard to migrants, reference should be made to the intervention of deputy Aboubakar Soumahoro, who this morning carried out an inspection visit to Rome’s permanent repatriation center on Ponte Galeria. “I returned to the center to see if the reports presented in a parliamentary matter, filed following my visit on March 20th, had had any effect. Indeed, I found people with psychological problems and self-harm, as well as some women in an evident state of confusion. I did not verify the presence of minors in that circumstance, despite having visited all the structures”, words of the distinguished deputy, now belonging to the Mixed Group. But during today’s visit, continues Soumahoro, “one boy in particular, speaking in French, said I told myself that I was a minor and had been on a hunger strike for a few days; the same thing was told to me by another. I believe there is also another minor, so three in all. I asked the representative of the City Hall, the police and the director of the center to check out what these guys were telling me. After a series of checks, a communication from the Juvenile Court arrived explaining that one of them, a minor, had been entrusted to the prefect of Rome, Gualtieri, as guardian”.
“Two of the minors – highlighted Soumahoro – will leave the community and will be housed in a special structure for unaccompanied minors. But one of them was on hunger strike and had lost about 5 kg. The third, who does not speak French or Italian, will be heard at the next Monday with a linguistic mediator. However, a very serious violation of the law that provides in article 19, paragraph 4, of Decree-Law No. 142 of August 18, 2015 that unaccompanied foreign minors cannot be detained in the Repatriation Centres. Some of these minors had been there for more than 20 days. These are illegal places that must be imperatively closed. Words about migrants that seem to clash with what the Latin Public Prosecutor’s Office contested to the partner in the management of cooperatives.
