It says the meeting will take place following an invitation from the President of the United States and “offers a unique opportunity to reaffirm the solid alliance between our nations, in an expanded and reformed framework of cooperation and friendship, for the benefit of the peoples.” of both countries”.
The meeting will address various bilateral issues such as migration, counter-narcotics, climate change, energy transition, investment and peace, among others.
It’s worth noting that Petro’s presence in the US capital is part of a trip to the United States starting Sunday that will also take him to New York and Stanford.
In the first city, he will participate in the opening of the 22nd session of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, at UN headquarters, on Monday, while he will travel to California on Tuesday to deliver a conference at Stanford University on the environment and social justice from a Latin American perspective.
Petro will then travel on to Washington, where he will stay until Friday. On the same Wednesday, the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) will hold a protocol session to receive the president.
The prospective meeting between Biden and Petro comes after the high-level dialogue between the United States and Colombia was held in Washington late last month, where US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Secretary of State met Colombian Álvaro Leyva . , and several issues of interest to both countries were discussed.
