Government, Meloni flies to Sunak to strengthen ties with the UK

Giorgia Meloni at Downing Street for a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. The prime minister will be in London starting tomorrow, for a ‘two days’ that aims to crown the excellent state of bilateral relations between the two countries and relaunch a global strategic dialogue with a partner and reference ally. It is no coincidence that this is Prime Minister Meloni’s first two-day visit to a European country, a sign of the importance, as Palazzo Chigi points out, that the Italian government attaches to relations with the United Kingdom.

In Downing street it is a return of Italy to the City: Mario Draghi, during his mandate, did not go on a mission to London – thanks to his travels ‘weakened’ by the advance of the pandemic -, therefore the last Italian Prime Minister in the British capital it was Giuseppe Conte, and that was well before Covid upset the planetary balance. Tomorrow’s bilateral meeting between Meloni and the UK Prime Minister, both young debutants at the G20 in Bali, is the second meeting following the COP27 sideline talk in Egypt (November 2022, ed) a few weeks after the inauguration of their respective governments.

Now Italy – writes Adnkronos – is preparing to sign an important package of bilateral agreements and there is room for a greater intensification of exchanges, especially in the most innovative sectors such as the ‘green’ economy, advanced technologies, life sciences, start-ups and digital innovation. With an eye on the defense sector, at the heart of the industrial collaboration between Italy and the United Kingdom. In fact, Rome is fully engaged in the development of the GCAP/Tempest program, a trilateral initiative that also involves Japan, of strategic value, for the sixth generation multirole fighter project. Meloni’s ‘mission’ thus aims to strengthen the axis between two NATO countries close to the US, and to keep relations alive with a conservative leader with whom we have been in full synchrony since the beginning: from a firm hand on migrants to support, unconditionally, for Ukraine against Russian aggression. And the war in Kiev will be among the hot topics at the center of the prime minister’s visit to the city tomorrow and Friday.
