The government blocks the migrant decree. Stop special protection and more repatriations

Tomorrow, the Migrants Decree arrives at the Chamber of Deputies. Must be approved within a week. The deadline to convert it into law, in fact, is May 9. The text, according to parliamentary sources, will be “armored”. The government has yet to officially announce whether it will raise the trust issue, but if time goes on, there is no doubt it will resort to it. Especially because the opposition presented three harmful questions, which will be voted on before the examination of the measure. The initial discussion will start at 10 am tomorrow morning. Voting cannot take place before 3 pm, but the process may still take some time. As mentioned, most do not want to waste time, so much so that, if necessary, night sessions will also be scheduled.

The decree, already approved in the Senate, covers a wide range of aspects related to immigration. This can already be understood by the title: “Legal flows of entry of foreign workers and the prevention and combat of irregular immigration”. Among the most discussed rules is the restriction on special protection, that type of residence permit, which has become a de facto amnesty, which is granted to those who do not have the requirements to obtain refugee status or subsidiary protection for citizens of countries in war . From 2020 until today, around 45,000 special protections have been granted to migrants disembarking on our coasts. The institute’s ratio would like beneficiaries to immediately start a training course that will lead them, in a short time, to find work.
In reality, however, this is almost never the case. Just over 5% managed to find a job. The Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi, defined the special protection as a “factor of distortion of the rules of entry and stay”. That’s why the government intends to significantly tighten the requirements for obtaining this type of permit.

Among the other measures contained in the decree, a new crime is included in the penal code, that of death or injuries caused by those who organize the illegal trafficking of migrants. It’s the anti-smuggler article. Sentences of 20 to 30 years are foreseen if such illegal activity could cause someone’s death. In addition, the provision gives the government the possibility to derogate a series of rules to build new detention centers for the repatriation of irregular migrants.
