A decision by the Council of State has caused a political storm in the country in recent hours. It is about the annulment of the election of Senator Roy Barreras as President of the Senate for dual militancy. According to the Supreme Court, for his application and choice to be valid, the civil servant must have fulfilled his duty constitutional by lay down his seat 12 months before the elections.
In this regard, President Gustavo Petro spoke from Spain, where he said that this decision of the Council of State does not disqualify Barreras, “it allows him for other types of public functions”. In this sense, he said he will wait for the state of health of the senator, who is undergoing treatment to fight cancer, to improve.
Similarly, when asked by some journalists whether he thinks Roy Barreras could work as a minister in the government, the president replied with a laugh but emphatically: “the cabinet is complete.”
It is worth noting that once Senator Roy spoke about the ruling, he assured that “court rulings are respected even if they are unfair in my opinion. I will continue to fulfill my duty until I am notified.”
In addition, he added that he has a custody to restore the rights of their voters.
“They anticipated my medical retirement announced a few days ago six months ago. I will come back. Colombia will continue to count on me.”
Minutes later, he told EL HERALDO from Congress that “this scenario is not the only one in which the country can be served, and from where we are we will continue to work towards a stable, sensible, fairer and more peace”.
