“Fortunately, it was not this government that had to face the pandemic”, with this sentence, the representative of the Chamber for the Democratic Center, Andrés Forero, rejected the controversial statements of the Minister of Health, Guillermo Jaramillo, during his speech in the reform debate, where he assured that in Colombia they are setting up a “company” with covid-19 by “tripling” the Intensive Care Units.
According to what the congressman stated, it is “unacceptable for the Secretary to come out, without any evidence, to say that the expansion strategy of Intensive Care Units during the pandemic was part of an economic strategy of health actors.”
He also argued that this statement ignores the great efforts of health workers to save the lives of Colombians infected with this virus.
“This government, which has not been able to bring the vaccines against monkeypox and the devalent vaccines against Covid-19, cannot lecture and cannot criticize a strategy that is recognized around the world,” said Representative Andrés Forero.
For his part, Senator Humberto De la Calle claimed that Minister Guillermo Jaramillo “has got off to a bad start. It must prove concretely what the UCIs have negotiated, how much the amount is, who is responsible. But to now criticize investments made during a serious pandemic is irresponsible and contradicts the idea of preventive health.”
There were also statements from the Radical Change Party. Senator David Luna told the head of the ministerial portfolio that “pontify” after the tragedy is easier than facing it.
“Many of us remember the suffering of thousands of families due to COVID and the prayers of millions that an additional ICU would be made possible daily. Your statements are disrespectful to medical personnel, don’t lose your mind to gain a political impulse, never ignore the battle that took place at such a difficult time for humanity,” stressed Senator Luna.
