Elly Schlein and Giorgia Meloni are naked and pregnant. The protagonists of AleXandro Palombo’s new mural “Power is Woman” designed in Milan’s Piazza San Babila are the two main government and opposition leaders, rivals and adversaries. Schlein has the inscription “My womb is my choice” on her lap (my womb is my choice, ed) and Meloni’s “Not for rent” (not for rent, ed), a tricolor flame and rainbow flag tattoo has been made on his arms. The well-known street artist – already the author of the famous mural of The Simpsons who was deported in front of the Shoah memorial – thus decides to tackle the surrogacy issue after the controversy surrounding the “Baby Wish” fertility fair.
A weekend full of rights debates
Surrogacy is an important and controversial issue that the majority and the opposition have been facing for months. Meloni said the government is working to make it a “universal crime” through a law, while the opposition continues to support the need to expand civil rights by enacting a law that regulates the processes of truth that is commonly present in the country.
In order to “inform and educate”, the “Baby Wish” fertility fair, “parent education” event was held in Milan between 20-21 May. With not little controversy, the event scheduled for 2022 was blocked at the last moment. For the 2023 edition, the fair took place regularly, despite the principles of Lega and Fratelli d’Italia. The purpose of the meeting, called the “packed kids fair”, was to inform couples who want to have children about new technologies that enable parenting by overcoming the physical barriers of natural mating.
Family Minister Eugenia Roccella also spoke about the event on the program. In the air David Parenzo says he is opposed to such a meeting and how it is necessary to consider how what happened in Milan “doesn’t contradict the rules of our legal system that prevent such practices from being declared by law, as well as their enforcement”.
Still, on the subject of civil rights, the minister was challenged at the Turin Book Fair and prevented from finishing his presentation of his new story, “A Radical Family.” Protesters interrupted Roccella’s speech, starting a debate to which the media objected widely and to which the minister had no chance to respond. On topic – always a In the air “Legitimate argument, don’t make me talk about anything else,” he explained.
“A Historic Opportunity”
After a weekend of rights debates, Palombo decided – via mural – to highlight Italy’s “great opportunity” in dealing with such intimate themes: “Giorgia Meloni and Elly Schlein share a history of opportunity – explained: men to women’s issues to go to the summit and discuss directly without worrying about interference”. According to the street artist, it is an opportunity that can help gender equality, women’s emancipation and self-determination.
