The fleet of vehicles used by public administrations in Italy has halved since 2011. As of December 31, 2022, 30,665 blue cars (driver service available to senior executives) and gray cars (driverless, available to offices for precise operational activities) were registered, compared to over 72,000 in service 11 years ago. At that time, however, it was optional to participate in the monitoring of the service cars. And therefore, the number of times can be underestimated.
The photo is taken from data published by the Public Administration department in collaboration with Formez pa and analyzed by the Center for Local Government Studies (Csel). Of the more than 30,000 cars in service today, more than seven-tenths are owned by the government or its related institutions (21,770). 7,981 rental cars and 533 rental cars were added to these, 17 of which were with drivers. Even less than borrowed ones (379).
“Although the curve has rebounded slightly in recent years compared to that time, it has therefore more than halved overall,” Csel writes.
As a matter of fact, as of December 31, 2019, the number of cars participating in the survey was 25,668, the following year 26,627, and the total number of vehicles at the end of 2021 was 29,894. However, there may be an explanation behind this small increase. In fact, it should be noted that at the same time, the proportion of organizations that do not comply with the obligation to transmit data on their vehicles has decreased. According to December 2019, 5 thousand more vehicles in the assets of the institutions may not be from the actual expansion of the vehicle fleet, but from the cars that were not included in the photo taken at that time.
