To say that the atmosphere is tense at Pd’s house is an understatement. In the dock, politically speaking, is the management of the election campaign by the secretary. Although Francesco Boccia, leader of the group in the Chamber, tries to minimize: “We will strive to make an honest analysis, Elly Schlein took office on March 12, all alliances were closed, as well as the lists, and the candidates she did not choose them”. It is Boccia himself who is accused by the party minority as being loyal to the secretary.
On display the defeat at Brindisi in Puglia. where the Democratic Party limited itself to supporting Roberto Fusco, the candidate chosen by the M5S. The other representatives of the secretariat in the regions also have to answer for the electoral defeat, from Marta Bonafoni in Lazio to Peppe Provenzano in Sicily. Just like Emiliano Fossi and Marco Furfaro in Tuscany. Only the former red region is a coincidence: the Democratic Party only won in Pescia. And managed to lose in all the big cities: Massa, Pisa and Siena. The Riformist Base, a current headed by Lorenzo Guerini, has certainly been very critical and has long been in turmoil over the party’s (unagreed) shift to the left. The minority also contests the “loneliness” of the secretary, who does not consult anyone and trusts only her magic circle, renamed the “circle of the tortellini”, since it mainly brings together executives from Emilia Romagna. In particular, Igor Taruffi (faithful to Schlein) and Davide Baruffi, (of “Bonaccinian” origin), respectively responsible for the organization and local bodies of the party. Baruffi himself thundered yesterday: «There is no judgment against Schlein. We said it would be a desert crossing.
And yet, there are those who do not hide: “The Democratic Party must know how to talk to everyone, even the moderates, not just the left”, says Senator Alessandro Alfieri. While Matteo Ricci, mayor of Pesaro and coordinator of the mayors of the Democratic Party, goes so far as to invoke a “new constituent phase to win the next European elections”. That the atmosphere is tense is also demonstrated by the secretary’s last-minute change of plans. Yesterday he had to fly to Brussels to regroup his people in the European Parliament in view of tomorrow’s vote on the ASAP (Support Ammunition Production Act), the measure desired by Commissioner Breton aimed at increasing European arms production for Ukraine. The EU intends to allocate 500 million euros also through the Pnrr.
Schlein’s line, on the other hand, is yes to weapons, no to the use of Pnrr resources. In the end, the secretary decided not to fly. The meeting with the 16 Democratic deputies was held via video link. Brando Benifei was confirmed as head of the delegation and it was decided to present amendments aimed at preventing the use of Recovery money to send arms to Kiev. The party, however, is divided on the position to be taken on the device in general: there are those who vote in favor and those who consider abstaining. If Schlein opted to stay in Rome to smooth things over, things don’t look any better in Brussels. There are those who express their discomfort on Twitter, such as MEP Elisabetta Gualmini: ««The Democratic Party says no to everything. No to cutting the tax burden, not to the government (which we launched), not to everything. Adding that we have the fascists in the government. And our proposals do not understand what they are. How do you convince voters?”
