It is the first time that he participates in the parade on the 2nd of June as prime minister. Giorgia Meloni takes the opportunity to underline that, respecting the role of everyone, the government and the opposition, we need to work together towards a common goal. Yesterday, for the official, it was not “a simple celebration”, but “the dimension of the fact” that “we have a duty, or we all start working together, all on the same side, or no one alone can get out of a crisis situation” . «No one – he adds – can solve the problems, we must understand that we are all connected, we must all row in the same direction. If we don’t remember that what we have was built by someone, even sacrificing themselves, then we don’t even understand the sense of why we should make sacrifices for those who come after us. This is the homeland: a dimension of sacrifices that are made together, for those who made it before us and for us who make it for others”.
However, the usual silence comes from the main leader of the opposition. It doesn’t appear that Elly Schlein has any intention of accepting the invitation to collaborate. He has already had the opportunity to prove it, from the table on reforms to the wavering position in support of Ukraine, as seen in Thursday’s vote, when the Democratic Party split in Brussels. A concept well expressed by the leader of Azione Carlo Calenda: “What’s the use of doing politics if when your opponent proposes something and you, regardless of that, say it’s wrong even if it’s right, like the left did when cutting the wedge tax? If the left and Schlein do that, it will remain more and more marginal because Italians want the problems to be solved”.
Yesterday morning Meloni took part, together with the highest officials of the state, in the deposition of a laurel wreath on the altar of the homeland by the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella. He then participated in the parade of the Armed Forces at the Fori Imperiali. At the end, he took some selfies with some supporters and a brief chat with the president of the Senate, Ignazio La Russa, sitting at a table in the “hospitality” area set up by the Ministry of Defense. «It is always a strong emotion to participate in the celebrations of the 2nd of June – he wrote on Twitter – Today we celebrate the 77th anniversary of the birth of our Republic, a symbol of national unity and of the identity of the Italian people. We proudly honor our history and the founding values of the Italian Constitution. We pay tribute to the fallen who sacrificed their lives for the defense of the homeland and for the sacred principles of freedom, equality and democracy, and we thank the members of the Armed Forces who every day, with a spirit of service and unwavering dedication, work for the peace and stability of the Italy and the world. Thank you to all those who contribute to making Italy the great nation that it is”. As Mattarella did, the Prime Minister himself could not fail to mention the war in Ukraine and the support that our country guarantees Kiev: “This is more a war party. Our duty is to work to defend freedom, defend the values that founded European civilization, defend a sovereign nation and seek peace. A peace that cannot fail to take into account that there is a nation under attack and a nation that is attacking, therefore nothing can be built without Ukraine’s consent”.
Support was also reaffirmed by retweeting the message greeting the Republic Day, written in Italian, by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, on his profile, because “nothing called peace can be confused with the word invasion. There is a nation attacked, and one that attacks. We all work for peace, but we cannot avoid starting from the assumption that this peace cannot be built without the consent of the victims”.
