Migrants, Tajani and Weber call for greater involvement of European states in solving the emergency. To contain the problem, greater cooperation is needed from each country, which will have to overcome national selfishness in view of a common interest. “The European Union urgently needs to correct its migration policy, paying special attention to the central Mediterranean, where irregular arrivals continue to increase despite a decrease in flows on other routes”. It was written by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, and the leader of the European People’s Party group, Manfred Weber, in an intervention at La Stampa.
“To be successful – they explain – it will be necessary to build a migration policy that demonstrates the unity of all member states and the will to find shared solutions. We will never reach the goal if we continue to close national borders and discuss who should welcome the last migrants landed on our shores, if national selfishness prevails over European solidarity”. According to Tajani and Weber, an “effective migration policy” must “begin with securing our borders”. The EU, they continue, must then “establish a code of conduct for NGO vessels” and “work closely with our partners in sub-Saharan Africa to address the root causes of migration”.
