The Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Matteo Salvini, spoke at the time of questions to the Chamber on speed cameras, announcing his intention to modify the system for detecting the speed of means of transport in Italy. “We are working on speed cameras so that they are standardized at a national level and are a useful tool to save lives, and not just be used to raise money to restock municipal houses” words of the leader of the League, who then continued as follows in the in front of the deputies: “It is one thing to protect road safety, it is another to intervene in inappropriate mobility situations. Until June, the Chambers will be able to contribute to a Road Code that intends to bring more rules and more education to Italian roads”.
Salvini made it clear how much he is concerned about a change in the system: “The problem found in administrative practices is that some of the devices used by the Municipalities are not homologated and require constant maintenance to maintain performance standards. In order to standardize the instrumentation used in the national territory, it is therefore essential to proceed with the equivalence of the homologation and homologation processes of the speed detection systems. Therefore, a unique system that is equally recognized throughout Italy. It’s one thing to place speed cameras near schools, hospitals, particularly dangerous stretches, it’s quite another thing to treacherously place speed cameras that have nothing to do with road safety, but which are a hidden tax for drivers and motorcyclists. There will be – comments the deputy prime minister – the definition of certain rules, fair and effective sanctions and the right of defense for citizens who cannot be instruments, but must be protagonists of road safety”.
