Europe and the United States must “ensure Russia’s defeat”, “there are no alternatives”, because a victory for Russia “would demolish the European Union”. This is the alarm raised by former Prime Minister Mario Draghi, who spoke at MIT in Boston, where he hosted Prime Minister Miriam Pozen of the Golub Center for Finance and Policy. “The war in Ukraine, as never before, demonstrated the EU’s unity in defending its founding values, going beyond the national priorities of each country. This unit will be crucial in the coming years. The war in Ukraine and inflation are the consequence of a paradigm shift, which in the last two decades has shifted geopolitics from competition to conflict. Europe and the United States have no choice but to ensure Russia’s defeat in Ukraine,” said the former ECB number one in his speech.
According to Draghi, the EU needs to be “redesigned”, welcoming countries like Ukraine (which according to him should join NATO), the Balkans and the countries of Eastern Europe”. Not only that, an effort is needed to arrive at a common European defense system. The effects of the conflict will be felt for a long time: “We must prepare ourselves for a prolonged period in which the global economy will behave very differently compared to the recent past”, that is, there will be “always higher deficits”, because it will not be possible to finance the challenges that States face, such as the climate emergency, with tax increases alone.
Draghi was a flood during his speech: “The brutal invasion of Ukraine is not the unpredictable act of mad madness, but the next step in Vladimir Putin’s agenda and a determined blow to the European Union. Peace, freedom and respect for democratic sovereignty are our common values. Accepting a Russian victory would mean putting other borders at risk and sending the message to other autocrats that the EU is ready to compromise. A clear message for the entire audience.
