For Fabio Fazio and Lucia Annunziata it was not possible to do anything but accept their choice. Rai’s new CEO Roberto Sergio seems to explain this. In his speech to the Supervisory Board, which was also attended by the company’s president, Marinella Soldi, the CEO broke the silence on the two outputs that were most discussed in the upheaval after the change of government. “The approach that moves us is anything but ideological”, he wanted to clarify, and then continued with his explanations: “I am referring to the announcement of a professional of the caliber of Lucia Annunziata who regrets having wanted to deprive user citizens, who are our shareholders of last resort, from their point of view. If it was necessary, but it wasn’t, we would have defended her space. And the presenter of Che Tempo Che Fa? Well, “I can’t speak about Fazio, because he had already decided before I took office to try his luck elsewhere”.
In the fire days that followed in the period of revolution also from the top management of Rai, the fear of viewers also concerned a possible dismantling of Report. Sergio, during his speech, also spoke about Siegfried Ranucci’s broadcast, comforting the Italians: “No investigative broadcast will be suppressed”. Another issue addressed by the new manager of the public service, with a final caveat, concerns one of the pillars of the Constitution, namely the pluralism of information: “Rai must belong to everyone, it cannot fail to belong to everyone, under penalty of incompatibility with the constitutional dictates and the loss of its universality. From this it follows that, on the one hand, it cannot exclude anyone and, on the other hand, it cannot be the prerogative of just a few.” And on Rai’s licensing fee, which the Minister of the Economy Giancarlo Giorgetti said he wanted to eliminate, here is the CEO’s comment: “We will ask for a meeting with the Minister tomorrow, let’s imagine that 2024 will be charged as it is now, if we receive a formal communication, we will take note of it and discuss it”.
