A composed, polite silence. From other times. Out of fashion, out of step with current politics. The screamed, gesticulated, full of hate and poor in content. The real ones. Elly Schlein sacked Gianni Cuperlo and replaced him at the top of the PD Foundation with Nicola Zingaretti. The choice of secretary arises today, at least officially, from the desire to improve European relations and to place the structure of the DEM in the Foundation for European Progressive Studies. This is the foundation of the parties that adhere to the PSE, of which the Democratic Party is not yet a member. The former governor of Lazio, according to the native of Lugano, would be the perfect profile for this task given that, next year, he will be a candidate in the European elections as leader of Lazio.
But Cuperlo didn’t take it well. And comments and criticisms of Schlein were unleashed in the dem chats. “In recent years – the secretary declared yesterday when announcing the appointment – thanks to the great commitment of Gianni Cuperlo, constant activity has been guaranteed in the research and training initiative. Now, also with the aim of formally constituting the Foundation, we want to provide the Democratic Party with a common research instrument – as already happens in all European parties – and to reinforce our identity, open to collaboration with other centers of study. We need a long, deep reflection that looks at what is happening around us, at other experiences of foundations, with which we need a comparison that values pluralism within this party”.
Elly Schlein, unable to talk about the present, tried to throw the ball across the field. And venture into hypotheses about the future. “A look to the next 10-20 years is needed, making politics go back to not just being obsessed with the next election term.” Finally, the accent on the (supposed) wealth of a party divided in practically everything could not be missing. “Here – said Zingaretti – we will have to unite the differences, in a place where the many souls of the party can meet in sharing and in the idea of a common profile”.
