The two days in Cesena ended when Bonaccini gathered his followers to give life to the “no” current, which he prefers to call the “political-cultural space”, created to “overcome the exasperated currentism that had paralyzed the party”. In short, a space for those who found little space in Schlein’s Democratic Party. Bonaccini’s last attempt to keep those who would like to expel the secretary after 5 months. But also to send a message like: “Dear Elly, I don’t want to harm you, I’m not going to make war on you, but if we don’t reach 20% in the European elections, I won’t be able to keep cooling the spirits of those who want to kill you”. But who spoke and what was said on stage at the event? Let’s start with alliances. The theme continues to be relations with the 5 Star Movement and with Calenda and Renzi. Reformists remain opposed to the possibility of a deal with Conte’s party, a path Schlein would like to take. “There is a common feeling,” said Bonaccini speaking of the relationship with the Third Pole and the grillini “that can unite us in a battle that does not prefigure political alliances in the country tomorrow morning.” Prodi also spoke on the subject: “I am certainly not against alliances, but they must be based on a shared idea of Italy and its future.” While, on the contrary, in recent years “the need for temporary alliances also prevailed for balances of power”.
Another point: the loss of voters. It’s no secret that for years the dem has been losing many voters along the way, who have been thrown off balance by the constant changes in direction. “In 15 years – recalled Prodi – the Democratic Party has lost half of its voters and that should force us to rethink our relationship with the country and a house that can accommodate Italians”. The mayor of Prato, a former iron Renzian now recycled among the Bonacinians, was more caustic, dismissing the matter with a joke: “Dear secretary, it’s true, maybe we didn’t see you arrive… now, however, we’re waiting to see the voters.” Another topic: the space and freedom to initiate an internal party debate. “We want a bigger and stronger party that is necessarily plural and open”, said Bonaccini. Cuperlo is also of the same opinion, only torpedoed by the leadership of the Pd Foundation, who recalled how “pluralism is never a burden, but it is a way to unite consensus”. Unit. Another of the words often spoken during the two days in Cesena. “The Democratic Party – underlined Prodi – still has the possibility of being the pivot of transformation, but it is an objective that can only be achieved with a unitary spirit, which has often failed”.
The same concept also expressed by Graziano Delrio in a climbing version. «You don’t cut the leader’s rope, he is the one who opens the way, but if you see from below that he is taking the wrong path, you are free to say so». Senator Dem, a few days ago, also criticized the party’s position on surrogacy, calling it “a practice in which there is nothing of humanity and there is no respect for the rights of the child”. Meanwhile, Schlein tries not to get upset and responds in kind. “Ours is a plural party” pluralism that must be preserved “naturally in relation to the result we had a few months ago in congress and which gave us an indication of the line to follow.” To those who asked for spaces for discussion, he replied: “There are no other parties that have this type of internal debate, this type of plural discussion and that can boast local administrators who are our pride”. It is already a pity, however, that in Cesena both the local administrators and the party minority came together precisely to find that space they did not find in the party.
