Tough times for Elly Schlein a few months after winning the primary to lead the Democratic Party. The real danger for the leadership does not come from Stefano Bonaccini, who launched his current “Energia Popolare”, but who signed a truce until the European elections, with the possible candidacy for leaders in the Northeast constituency. As Affari Italia reveals, the real crucial point is that of relations with the Catholic current led by Lorenzo Guerini, Graziano Delrio, Pierluigi Castagnetti and Piero Fassino. It is by no means a minority part of the Democratic Party, with issues such as surrogacy and the use of Pnrr funds for weapons in Ukraine having seen some deviations from the Secretary’s line.
“The impression is that the secretary is in trouble, closed in the circle of her faithful and little (or not at all) inclined to internal dialogue”, writes the website in its background, which continues as follows: “Qualified sources of the Riformist Base explain that these will be difficult months. A slice of the Democratic Party does not accept the secretary’s dictates and is ready to act independently. At the moment there is no talk of separation, but any slip on key issues could precipitate the situation”.
