Nordio: “Every suicide in prison is my personal defeat”

Allow more phone calls between inmates and family members. That is the intention of Justice Minister Carlo Nordio. This was foreseen by the Guardian himself in a video message to those working and living in prisons on the occasion of 15 August.

“Nordio says that the prison is forgotten, especially during this time when people are on vacation. I wanted to convey my message to you, because he lives – and works – in prisons – even on August 15, it is part of our Republic. There are officials of the state – to whom we have to thank – and there are those who have been deprived of their liberty. They are being sentenced in those prisons, and they are restarting the path of reintegration into society as required by the Constitution.”

Words from a difficult time, there have been several cases of suicide among prisoners in recent weeks. Like 43-year-old Nigerian Susan John, who starved herself “because she wanted to be near her son” in Vallette prison in Turin. And again in the same prison, a few hours away, another woman, in this case a 28-year-old Italian, was found dead in her cell after taking her own life. “My first thought – says Nordio – goes to the memory of those who made the dramatic choice to take their own lives. It’s not just a national tradition, it’s a worldwide tradition. It’s a tragedy that we must do everything to reduce, if not eradicate. Every suicide is for the state, for justice, and for myself. It is a defeat for him,” he said.

Nordio recalls “the recently issued circular to increase psychological assistance to prisoners in particular difficulties” and explains that the initiative was “part of a broader desire to be close to prisoners”. The state should guarantee the certainty of punishment, but we must not forget that punishment must have a re-educational meaning not only because the Constitution imposes it, but also because ethics imposes it on us. There are no quick and easy solutions, no magic wands. However, we are working with the highest priority to reduce the difficulties. We are doing this. we are hiring new staff and relying on as much employment as possible. Our attention is directed, first of all, to psychological assistants, because the difficult situation of prisoners requires not only supervision, but also assistance,
This is not only spiritual but also aid for physical healing, which may one day be a precursor to reintegration into society”.
