Friction between the government and the opposition over fuel prices has not eased. The display of plates with the average price does not seem to discourage speculation, given the numerous interventions by the Guardia di Finanza. The last reduction in excise taxes, which reduced the cost by around 30 cents per litre, was in effect until the end of 2022, but the possibility of reintroducing it is being discussed. Among other political forces, it is the Democratic Party that points the finger at Giorgia Meloni. According to the Pd, in fact, the prime minister would not have fulfilled the promises made during the election campaign regarding measures to contain exponential increases in petrol pumps. As Il Giornale reports, however, an important detail is overlooked: the increase in taxes on polluting fossil fuels, to penalize their consumption, is one of the pillars of the ecological transition strategy defended by Elly Schlein.
Raising taxes on fossil fuels to prevent their use is one of the arguments the Democratic Party is fighting so hard for that it was included in the electoral program. Indeed, those writings recommended “the adjustment, for an equal amount of revenue, of the structures and rates of indirect taxation, in line with the European Green Deal and with the harmonized European legislation on excise taxes, as well as car tax , according to the objectives of progressive zeroing of CO2 emissions”.
Today, however, the Democratic Party seems to have some amnesia, as Congressman Arturo Scotto said: “Let’s call it by name: excise duties are the Meloni tax. Before he promised their complete abolition. As soon as he put them in foot in Palazzo Chigi eliminated Draghi’s cut. Now he makes his ministers say that excise duties finance the tax wedge. It’s the three-card game”. Although it is always legitimate to express your opinion, it is a direct consequence to show how each party justifies taxes according to its program. The government, in fact, used these funds “to cut the tax burden twice” and intends to do so again with the next budget law. This statement was made by the Minister of Business and Made in Italy, Adolfo Urso.
