From resource to problem, the step is short, at least as far as dem mayors are concerned. In recent weeks, we have seen a series of complaints from Democratic Party leaders who raised the “problem of migrants”. Milan Mayor Beppe Sala has long been impatient with the matter. “Migrants continue to arrive in our area, silently and without any coordination between national and regional institutions, he denounced – We are worried that the situation could get out of control”, fearing that “social tensions” could arise. Shortly after, the mayor of Bergamo Giorgio Gori was added, who sent a letter to the Ministry of the Interior to complain about the 5 million euros he had to spend on unaccompanied minors. And a few days ago he declared: “The landings get out of control, that’s how the clandestine factory is fed”.
The leader of the protest, also responsible for the Anci of Immigration, is Matteo Biffoni, mayor of Prato. «The State in theory would give us 100 euros a day for each minor directly under our responsibility; but this amount is often not enough, because it has to cover possible rents, if we do not have structures available: and then the operators, language consultants, psychologists, in addition to food and the guarantee of other daily services ».
Statements that he has forcefully reiterated in recent days, stating that “everything has exploded, we are on the verge of collapse” because “with these numbers, if unaccompanied minors are still sent to us, we cannot guarantee that the established conditions are fulfilled by law”.
Three weeks ago, it was the governor of Tuscany, Eugenio Giani, who refused to receive the 3,000 immigrants from Lampedusa: “The criteria chosen by the government penalizes us”. But he was the one who opposed the extraordinary commissioner for migrants, calling it a “police approach”.
To these was added the Emilian governor Stefano Bonaccini: “There is a risk of tent cities arriving in the cities, I want to say it clearly. Because structures are needed to welcome migrants, and it’s not a political problem, but especially in the north, everyone who administers a territory sees an ever-increasing number of migrants arriving and that’s why you risk, without planning it, that your life will explode protest or social anger and hopefully there is a willingness to discuss the issue clearly. And I hope that there will be an immediate Conference of the Regions and that there will be a meeting with the government, because that way we run the risk of a problematic time ».
All true, but then why, as Viminale recalled, were the mayors and governors of the Democratic Party who rejected the state of emergency decreed by the government precisely to try to provide immediate solutions to the problem? Bonaccini himself had declared that “the question of commissioners is useless”.
Meanwhile, on the right, the awakening of the Emilian governor is met with astonishment. Marco Osnato, member of the FdI and chairman of the Finance Committee of the Chamber of Deputies, noted: “I read Bonaccini’s last statements with astonishment. Enjoying the awakening from a sinister slumber, I must say that it is now out of time. The danger has been there for many years, but he is only realizing it now.”
