Meloni’s silence awakens the Beast

it seems to me deja vu. A responsible prime minister on the one hand and a talkative leader on the other, too many. If there is a government that has left its mark on recent political history, it is the yellow-green government that emerged from the March 4, 2018 elections. For academics, a bizarre, antisystemic coalition not only resulted in the “correction”, the “Against” party, but also marked the fastest rise and most sudden fall of a political leader in recent years.
We know the story. Matteo Salvini tried a strategy: go against his government to snatch the votes and build consensus. It worked until he took off his shirt and sang the national anthem among the Cubists in Papeete. Fatal mistake that won’t happen again (a little ‘I hope not, it was fun).
Five years later, Salvini returned to government. at least go back somewhere her government: Let’s forget Draghi’s parenthesis, that period only clarified the consequences of his mistakes. This was evident not only in the polls, but also in the results of the 2022 election: a narrow 8.9 percent got him an executive seat (if not his favourite). A right-wing government led by the first female prime minister in Italian history, able to wisely muster the dissatisfied segments of the Northern League electorate with their leaders during the grand coalitions. Now we all believed that it was institutionalized and changed. We were wrong.
Now Salvini has sat down and won’t let go of that chair no matter what he changes (or at least wants to change). He didn’t get the Ministry of Interior he wanted and had five years ago: there’s something missing to want more, no votes, no political power. But suddenly, here’s the opportunity. Against the background of the European championships, a general’s book, the title says it all: “The world is turned upside down”. Given the context, it was clear how officer Vannacci’s writing would make headlines, create a sensation, give ideas, create controversy. So what is Salvini doing, is he depriving himself of it?
With content befitting any Lega or Fratelli d’Italia rally, Carroccio’s leader takes advantage of the debate in the country and keeps the wave going. Approval upon approval, the minister does not dwell on the fact that one of his favorite establishment forces considers millions of people as “abnormal”, he goes further, increases the dose. At the time, someone even stated that Salvini intended to nominate him (they were Forza Nuova’s friends, after all). We need votes: let’s get it. Forza Italia is still struggling after Berlusconi’s death, Fratelli d’Italia is the majority party headed by Giorgia Meloni. And he knows Meloni can’t speak.
It’s been a tough summer for the Prime Minister. Very troubled ministers, journalistic investigations, Pnrr funds, complex financial maneuvers. Giorgia Meloni has been armored with these statements for some time now and now evokes responsibility, seriousness and diligence. But the government partner disagrees. In a wave of some nasty news, he advocates another decree that punishes rather than educates, and as always believes that banning it is enough to fix a problem. It’s a repeating pattern. A waking monster.
The latest poll that worries Giorgia Meloni: Brothers of Italy fell
And on September 7, 2023, the Minister for Infrastructure came to attack European Commissioner Paolo Gentiloni, the former prime minister, who perhaps more than anyone else, is trying to make us look like a new authority in front of all of Brussels. “He looks like a foreign commissary,” says Salvini, “who plays for another national team.” The Minister of Infrastructure accuses Gentiloni of not serving Italy’s interests one hundred percent. Later, the former prime minister, now a European coach after the remarks, had to confirm “by definition” that his role had the full support of the Italian government. It’s a strange phrase to write, how much more communication will be made.
The monster wakes up. Will Giorgia Meloni end up like Giuseppe Conte? Tomorrow explains how he feels “calm”, perhaps aware that there is a hypothetical early emergency voting weapon in terms of numbers. Silence on his behalf, at least the official one. There are too many people to stay away from and take responsibility for: To conclude the circle of controversial statements that he lacks greatly, there was no analogy with our comrade and the wolves in the mirror.
He understood the weight of his role when he drank three glasses of water in his opening speech in the Assembly, and he did so immediately. A detail that reveals a unique feeling that I can’t forget.
So now we are working, there is Maneuver, there is Pnrr, we have to give the country a sense of security in the workplace and towards women. So much grisly news, so much delay with the EU. We have to solve the cost of fuel, pensions and young people. We should go. The question remains whether Salvini understood this. Or if a hypothetical change after the 2024 European Championship becomes more important to him than anything else. On the other hand, what could be worse for Italy’s interests? A European commissioner doing his job or a minister opposing his government?
