Migrants, the EU wakes up in Lampedusa: von der Leyen’s decision

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, will visit Lampedusa this weekend, today or tomorrow. At this point, the precise timing of von der Leyen’s visit has not yet been defined, reports the EU source who released the news. For today, the agenda of the president of the Community Executive includes a speech in Hanau, Germany, on European perspectives at the meeting of federal delegates of the CDU Women’s Union, while tomorrow the president will begin a five-day visit to New York to participate in the work of the United Nations General Assembly.

Yesterday, the President of the Commission accepted the invitation of the Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni. And now the quick gesture: among many Member States there is a shared thought on the need to act collectively to stop what is increasingly perceived as an emergency, precisely taking into account the concern represented by the situation in Lampedusa, which represents a multiplier of fears about the increase in migratory flows at the EU’s borders.
