They warn of alleged interference in politics by local leaders

Lawyer Margarita Cabello Blanco has called for attention to regional and local leaders due to the identification of prohibited behavior that could lead to inappropriate intervention in politics.

The head of the Public Prosecution Service alleged that some authorities took advantage of some legal loopholes to intervene in the electoral process. In this way, according to Cabello Blanco, they would give the appearance that they are not breaking the law.

“I am concerned about the attitude of leaders and officials who walk like a tightrope across the fine line that separates the exercise of office and inappropriate participation in politics,” the attorney general said.

In this regard, Cabello Blanco indicated that “these characters ensure that they do not expose themselves to the severity of the ban, but that they defy the control. With gimmicks and euphemisms they give the unmistakable feeling of bias.”

In addition, he indicated that the control entity does not investigate, investigate or sanction based on perceptions, but noted that the country expects from those who have the responsibility to represent citizens and institutions “not only behavior that is in accordance with the law, but also graceful, exemplary and coherent.”

On the other hand, Attorney Blanco indicated that, after the last assessment in the Disability and Sanctions Registry Information System (Siri), the number of candidates who registered annotations causing inability to be elected and hold office has increased.

According to this report, 724 applicants did not meet the standards as of September 19. This represents an increase of 52 candidates compared to the first cutoff of August 2023. It has already been sent to the National Electoral Council for the respective registration withdrawal process.

Finally, Cabello Blanco reported that 23 judicial lawyers had been appointed, who carried out public prosecutorial duties within the administrative actions to verify the disqualifications of said candidates.
