Santoro launches a new party on the left. “Assembly!”, the plan for Italy to exit the war

The Assembly public! For Peace, Land and Dignity, the assembly organized at the Ghione theater in Rome on the initiative of Raniero la Valle and Michele Santoro, signed by more than two thousand people including Fausto Bertinotti, Valeria Golino, Marc Innaro, Jorit, Marisa Laurito, Fiorella Mannoia , Milly Moratti, Piergiorgio Odifreddi, gave the green light, by raising his hand, to the journalist to form a list for the European elections.

Santoro has the key idea of “taking Italy out of the war. Leaving the war is a political slogan, which also speaks to the Democratic Party and the M5, raising the question of a possible political majority to leave not NATO, but the war. What can the Democratic Party, the Italian Left, the M5 do? They don’t talk about the war, they are ashamed.” The logic, for Santoro, is that of the “triggering effect of a list that will recover its representation over these parties that are dead in Italy and that will not be able to do anything if there is no one outside of them that revitalizes the situation”. Speaking to the many who asked to avoid the introduction of a new fragmentation on the left, Santoro specified that «we are in the middle of a crisis of democracy, the majority of incumbents will not vote, we are already fragmented, it is not a fragment, but a disaster. If we add an issue not because there is a crazy person, but because there are good reasons for it, if we can inspire a participatory movement in the country, then we will measure up, we will go and we will recover what was taken from us. Who says we don’t agree on everything, right? We shouldn’t dissolve any party, I don’t want to know what divides us, I challenge you to find what unites us and what really unites us is the way out of war.”

Michele Santoro also spoke to Stasera Italia on the sidelines of the meeting: «Now the work of building the program begins, but above all the organization to collect signatures begins, because we will not present the list if there is no popular participation. That is why it is essential to collect 150,000 signatures to present a list for the European elections. For a nascent party like ours, it is a very difficult challenge, but it reaffirms the autonomy of what we are doing. At the moment we have a single objective, for Italy to get out of the war and a series of reasons why this must be done, which will be the program. But the objective is just that: to take Italy out of the war, something that many Italians share, but not all will vote in favor. But their presence will lead the other forces to place the war in Ukraine at the center of the electoral campaign, which they would not do because, on the left, they are all embarrassed by the issue. We don’t want to be hostile to Conte or Schlein, much less to Fratoianni, who we hope will come with us.”
