Giuliano Amato, former prime minister and president emeritus of the Constitutional Court, was interviewed by Repubblica and, in times when rumors are circulating about his profile as a possible technical guide for an emergency government, he launched attacks on Giorgia Meloni and the UE about the issue of migrants: “Today we welcome those who are persecuted by a regime and reject those who are persecuted by hunger, this is unacceptable in terms of human rights. Europe must overcome a major misunderstanding and finally recognize economic refugee status. The recent package of measures relating to migrants only serves to demonstrate the existence of a problem and not to resolve it. Sociologist Niklas Luhmann explained it well: when those in power know that they cannot find solutions, they increase the decibel of political language to give everyone the impression that they are capable of finding solutions. This seems like one of those cases to me.”
“Giorgia Meloni’s problem – continues Amato’s intemperate – is common to many other right-wing sovereigntists in Europe, as reported in a recent article in the Economist. Faced with the need to govern, they realize that their extreme solutions are not practicable. And if before they shout against Europe, Meloni’s case is before our eyes, then they are forced to invoke him as a problem solver. The package of measures approved by Palazzo Chigi only demonstrates the difficulty the government has in mastering this difficult issue. These are rules that are very difficult to enforce, to put it politely, and that have little respect for rights.”
And finally we come to the fateful question about the rumors: “Did you know that some websites list you as prime minister of a future interim government?” Amato responds like this: “I read it and I don’t know if it’s more painful or more comical. I understand that Italy is increasingly a country of elderly people, but the mere idea of entrusting the government to an 85-year-old man demonstrates a distrust in younger generations that Italy does not deserve.”
