A farce generated within the Democratic Party and which lasted very little. “The Ministry of Defense discovers, with surprise, the specious controversies raised by a lamented ‘cut’ in contributions for the maintenance of the monument of the Marzabotto sanctuary by the city’s mayor, Valentina Cuppi, a member of the Democratic Party. Nothing could be more false, wrong and untrue” are the words of the ministry led by minister Guido Crosetto.
But it doesn’t stop there, as the case arose due to an error by the dem-led administration: “The Ministry of Defense is therefore limited to specifying that what is given every year, as established by the law in question, It is a contribution that aims to support the Municipality itself in the care and maintenance of the Sanctuary, which is owned by the municipality itself. The Municipality should have presented the contribution request by May, but the request only reached the competent bodies in August. The Chief of the Office for the Protection of Culture and Memory of Defense, Major General Diego Paulet, had already communicated to the mayor of Marzabotto that, in 2024, as soon as new resources were received, the contribution would be re-evaluated appropriately in relation to what already it was budgeted for 2023”.
“This is because – continues the ministry led by Crosetto – Defense considers, together and in addition to all others, preserved in the same way and with equal and correct care, the Sanctuary of Marzabotto, a city that was the scene of one of the most ferocious massacres of the Second World War, a milestone in the history of the Italian Resistance. Everything else is specious political controversy, respectable only as useful speculation to accuse the current government of a dangerous ‘fascist’ and ‘reactionary’ drift, about which the Ministry of Defense really has nothing to comment or respond to.” Crosetto, just to reiterate the center-right position, returned to the subject to ask for funds for the Sanctuary. So he asks for them late. Then he shouts that we are going to cut them. The funds are there and will be there.”
