Rai, M5S and Pd are still divided. Because they also argue on public TV

The M5S and Pd are divided within the Rai Supervisory Committee. After the back and forth of recent days on the migrant issue between leaders Giuseppe Conte and Elly Schlein, the Five Star Movement and the Democrats are also taking different paths in the new 2023-2028 service contract of the Viale Mazzini company. The green light from Rai Supervision is the first step, now the ball passes to the Ministry of Business and Made in Italy and the Rai Board of Directors for final approval. The favorable opinion for the service provision contract arrives at Palazzo San Macuto, but the opposition is divided regarding the text prepared by the majority rapporteur, Maurizio Lupi, leader of the Moderate Nos, in which some amendments by the minority were accepted. In addition to the majority parties, the 5 Star Movement also votes in favor. The Democratic Party, Italia viva, Alleanza Verdi and Sinistra are against, while Action abstains. «The green light was given by a large majority of the Rai Supervisory Committee, with the favorable vote of a significant part of the opposition, to the opinion on the Rai service contract. A constructive comparison between political forces that strengthens public service with a credible, sustainable, inclusive and responsible service contract”, is the immediate comment of Mimit owner, Adolfo Urso. For majority rapporteur Lupi, once again, «the opinion expressed by the Supervisory Committee, even with the favorable vote of M5S and the abstention from the Action, is an important sign that strengthens Rai’s mission as a public service and that allows the largest industry culture in the country to face the challenges of the future”.

While the minority speaker, dem Antonio Nicita, decides to postpone his mandate, because “as opposition parties we are dissatisfied with the result of the work of the Supervisory Commission for the Rai service contract” and “our observations and our amendments were accepted very few in the opinion prepared by the majority rapporteur”. The Dems do not agree and announce their vote against, the same choice made by the Avs “with conviction” and also by the Iv. Sandro Ruotolo (Pd) does not tell them to say: «It is sad that the 5 stars have voted in favor of a Rai that, with unified networks, would like to publicize the achievements of the right-wing government. We will oppose this plan.” While M5S sources reject the criticism: «The opinion we voted on today very clearly improved the contract received from Rai and Minister Urso. The Democratic Party, however, seemed confused to say the least: first it agreed with the text with the majority, then – with a final pirouette – it walked away, protesting. We don’t accept any lessons from the Democratic Party, stop playing these games.” And the leader of the Action-IV group in the Senate, Enrico Borghi, blurts out: «Evidently satisfied with the allotment, the M5S in the service contract with Rai votes for the umpteenth time with the majority, throws away the mask and reveals the mess» . Turning to the majority, Augusta Montaruli from Fratelli d’Italia, vice-president of the commission, speaks of “another step towards strengthening pluralism in the public service. After decades of occupation by the left, there is a new air in Rai, we saw it when the new leaders took office and we have confirmation of this today”. However, FI notes that “we have intervened in issues of great social relevance, to ask for greater protection for minors and also attention for teenagers, to whom specific programming should be directed”. Parliamentarians from the Rai Supervision League were “satisfied”, according to which the group’s work “was carried out along three main lines: disability, transformation into a Social Communication Company, technological investments and territory”.
