Migrants, Meloni celebrates success in the EU: “Italy has exceeded the limits”

“The amendment was withdrawn and the Italian position was approved.” The summary of yesterday is all in this sentence by Giorgia Meloni. The clause in the regulation on the management of migration crises, strongly desired by Germany, would have authorized NGO operations at sea. But it had no chance of being approved due to Italy’s firm opposition demonstrated from the beginning by the Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi. In the end, Olaf Scholz had to give up. It wasn’t worth pulling the rope too much. The cutting of the pro-NGO amendment is not the only success recorded yesterday at the meeting of Coreper, a committee that brings together ambassadors from the 27 Member States of the Union. Faster repatriations, mandatory solidarity mechanisms with relocations between European countries, reinforced border controls, These are all points strongly supported by the Prime Minister. Interviewed on Sky Tg24, Meloni explains the reason for her satisfaction: «It seems to me that clear words are being used when they say that human traffickers cannot decide who enters Europe, because it is a clear path that Europe wants to follow» . The Prime Minister also recalls all the diplomatic efforts of recent weeks and months: «We saw the declarations of the leaders of the Med 9 countries (the nine European states that border the Mediterranean, ed.), we saw France, with Germany one the discussion on the Pact on Migration and Asylum was opened because it called for the addition of an amendment that, in my opinion, went backwards on the issue of NGOs”.

The change, as mentioned, was withdrawn. Now “it’s a matter of quickly implementing the real tools, adds Meloni – Europe must be better at the speed of implementation.” The Italian left, however, does not agree. And he claims that it is actually a Pyrrhic victory. For example, the M5S says this. According to Giuseppe Conte’s movement, “the solidarity mechanism”, the one that triggers relocations, is only activated “in very well-founded cases”. But this aspect is taken for granted. In fact, there must be a clear emergency situation, like the current one, for example. And if Elly Schlein, from the Democratic Party, highlights Hungary and Poland’s vote against, Meloni responds in kind: “I must say that in the migrants’ dossier I don’t feel isolated”, on the contrary “it seems to me that a European left that continues to believe that it is capable of approaching this issue in an ideological way and, at the same time, carrying out work that helps no one. It seems to me that clear words are being used when people say that human traffickers cannot decide who enters Europe, because it is a clear path that Europe wants to follow.”

Finally, there is also space to comment on the sentence of the Catania judge who revoked the detention of three migrants in the center of Pozzallo. «I am a right-wing person, I respect institutions and the separation of powers. For me there is no open front with the Judiciary, but I would like to say that it is an incomprehensible sentence, I do not agree with it. Firstly, I worry about the corporate defense on the other side, because just as a magistrate has the freedom to say that a government measure is illegitimate, the government can say that it does not agree without this meaning attacking a category”, concludes Meloni.
