A bill allowing Public Safety officers (State Police, Carabinieri, Financial Police, Prison Police) to purchase and possess weapons, even without a license. It was introduced by Fratelli d’Italia senator Domenica Spinelli in Bill 848 and is likely to spark controversy.
If the bill is approved, police departments will regulate in their own regulations the situations in which a weapon other than the official weapon can be used. A license will not be required to purchase, but the requesting agent will still need to be registered with the organization to which it belongs.
Police are currently authorized by law to carry their service weapons off duty, but many people complain that the weapons provided do not suit “bourgeois” clothing. The stalemate stems from the request for weapons, which can only be made for “personal defense” purposes and which the governorships do not grant in the case of public security officers.
Additionally, the proposed law expands the possibility of traffic police officers and other persons “specified in articles 17 and 18 of the unified text of the law on public security officers and officials” to go around armed, albeit in civilian clothes.
Therefore, the law aims to equalize public safety officers with judges, governors, and public safety officers, who can now purchase and carry guns without a license.
