As in the days of Walter Veltroni and “but also”, Elly Schlein performs bold balancing acts. The most slippery issue is the Middle East, where the Democratic Party secretary is trying to keep pacifism and support for Israel together. “There is a clear border between justice and revenge, this border should never be crossed”, he said on Sunday, October 29, to Che tempo che fa, on the Nineth, stating that the Italian government should not have refrained from UN resolution on the Middle East: “We cannot fail to vote on a resolution that calls for a humanitarian truce. First, stop the bombing of schools and hospitals. We cannot witness the violation of international law.”
Fabio Fazio says: “We condemn the terrorist attacks by Hamas, which must be isolated from the Arab world”, then the classic “but”: “we maintain our critical judgment in relation to the policies of Netanyahu’s right-wing government, which today cannot punish collectively the entire Palestinian population. The lighthouse is international law. Two peoples, two states is the prerequisite for Israel’s security.”
The Democratic Party has not taken to the streets in Rome for two days. But the demonstration on November 11th in Rome (7 days after the demonstration announced by the League in Milan in defense of Western values), obviously called before the Hamas attack, will be “also a demonstration for peace”, is Schlein’s announcement.
