Institutional reforms, the position of prime minister reaches the Council of Ministers

The position of prime minister arrives at Palazzo Chigi. It is time for institutional reforms and the Meloni government is moving forward. Some minimal technical corrections, but the green light from the majority panel held at Palazzo Chigi to the text of the prime minister’s constitutional reform. The bill will therefore reach the Council of Ministers at the meeting next Friday, November 3rd. According to government sources, the text provides, among other things, for the suspension of the institution of appointment of other senators for life, without affecting the powers of the President of the Republic.

The revocation of the institution of the appointment of senators for life has long been a battle of the Brothers of Italy and its president Giorgia Meloni, who already in August 2019 called for its interruption through a social post in which he defined a “nineteenth-century figure » that of the senators who remain “parliamentary for the rest of their days”. At the party in Via della Scrofa it is highlighted that “it was always something we thought about. And if we did so it would also be institutionally unassailable because now, if we proceeded with the appointments, they would be clearly rebalanced with appointments closer to us. By giving up, there is a clear sign that this is not a political battle, but an institutional issue.”
