Rai license fee cut confirmed but money provided by State

The much-vaunted cut in Rai license fee will become a reality even if the State puts the money into it. In the text of the maneuver stamped by the State Accountant’s Office, the measure is available in art. 8 of Title III on reducing the tax burden, with the title “Reducing the RAI license fee and modernizing and improving the infrastructure of public radio, television and multimedia service networks.” It envisages resetting the television subscription fee for private use to 70 euros for 2024 and providing a contribution of 430 million euros to society from the Ministry of Commerce and Made in Italy. So what changes? Let’s go in order.

How do invoices change?

Among the many promises made by the League during the election campaign was the abolition of the Rai license fee, the tax most hated by Italians; so much so that Matteo Salvini made it one of his strong points. Now that he is in government, it is time to keep his word, and in a sense he is doing so, because from next year the television license fee will rise from 90 to 70 euros, even if the opposition claims that the government is playing a “three card game”.

One thing is certain: from 2024 we will save a total of 20 euros on the Rai license fee; This is usually 2 euros per month (10 installments per year) as it is included in the bill from January to October. Starting from next year, we will pay 7 euros per month instead of 9 euros, and 14 euros instead of 18 euros for bimonthly bills. Salvini, who seemed excited about the cut, reminded that it was the first step towards the goal, since the government’s goal was to reduce the tax introduced in February 1938 by 20% per year until it was completely canceled; It is expected to happen in 2027.

The money obtained from slaughter is provided by the state

While members of the executive celebrate, the opposition accuses the government of playing the usual “three card game” because this cut will be paid for with state money paid by taxpayers in taxes. In short, there will be no effective cuts because Italian citizens will always pay. Thanks to the license fee, Rai collects approximately 1.7 billion euros, with this new measure the total revenue will drop to approximately 1.2 billion euros, but the company will continue to receive subsidies from the state.

According to art. In Article 8 of the 2024 budget law, stamped by the State Accounting Office, Rai will recognize “a contribution equal to 430 million euros for 2024 for the improvement of the quality of public radio, television and multimedia service in the national territory.” Therefore, the reduction of the Rai license fee by 20 euros will correspond to the integration of Rai’s financing for investment-related expenses.

There are other details that are certainly overshadowed in the new budget law, but are no less important. Here they are listed in the special section of Today.it for the 2024 maneuver.
