Carlo Calenda’s statements deeply shook the Democratic Party, following the embrace between the leader of Action and Elly Schlein at the centrist party’s assembly. The secretary planned to adopt the winning model in Foggia, the “broad field”, to gradually expand it nationally, starting with the regional elections in the coming months. However, Calenda stressed that there will be no structural alliances with the 5 Star Movement. With the loss of Matteo Renzi, the Democratic secretary hoped to recover Action and its allies to create an opposition led by the Democratic Party against the center-right and Giorgia Meloni. But this hope quickly disappeared.
Any decision on structural alliances with a view to the European elections, and whoever takes it, runs the risk of causing a split in the Democratic Party, considered “inevitable” in the Affari Italiani report. It should be noted that Schlein seems oriented towards a possible alliance with Giuseppe Conte and 5 Stars, while a possible secretary like Paolo Gentiloni could look more towards the center and try to bring Renzi closer. And even the PD demonstration scheduled for November 11th sees divergent opinions within the party: Secretary Schlein emphasized the importance of the demonstration for peace, a value shared by all, but there is also controversy on this issue.
If the Democratic Party opted for an alliance with the M5S (in Schlein’s opinion), it could lose the support of part of the minority, including Lorenzo Guerini, Stefano Bonaccini and perhaps even Dario Franceschini’s moderates. On the other hand, if the Democrats chose a more central path (as suggested by the Gentiloni model), they could lose a significant part of the party’s left, including former Article 1 members and key figures like Andrea Orlando and perhaps even Nicola Zingaretti. In any case, it is expected that the issues will come to their due place and a new rupture will seem “inevitable”, according to the website. “Our strength is the lack of an alternative and the chaos of the opposition. Pd in the lead”, warns the center-right. True words were never spoken.
