Italy-Slovenia, suspension of the Schengen Treaty extended

Border controls with Slovenia will continue and their duration will depend on the evolution of international scenarios that led to the suspension of the Schengen Treaty. This was stated in Trieste by the Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi, at the end of the trilateral meeting with his counterparts from Slovenia and Croatia. «The reasons behind the decision to temporarily suspend are very clear and outlined», specified Piantedosi, reiterating that the checks will continue «I don’t know if until Christmas, but as long as the experts’ assessment of the need for this permanence remains. I hope they stop as soon as possible – he concluded – but this will depend on the evolution of the scenarios that led to the suspension”.

The Minister for Relations with Parliament, Luca Ciriani, also speaks out on the same topic. «The assessment of the first 10 days, after the reintroduction of controls on the border with Slovenia, made by Minister Piantedosi in Trieste, confirms that the decision taken, not lightly, is, however, effective and necessary at this time: ten people were arrested for aiding and abetting illegal immigration. The measure was extended from October 31st for another twenty days, in agreement with the Slovenian and Croatian governments, but its duration will also depend on the evolution of international scenarios. The government is progressively intensifying controls at secondary crossings as well. I thank Minister Piantedosi for the work he is doing, knowing that everything the Meloni government does is always and only to guarantee the safety of Italian citizens.” Luca Ciriani, Minister for Relations with Parliament, declares this.
