Prime Minister Matteo Renzi is open to the reform proposed by the Meloni government. «We want the direct election of the prime minister. Allowing citizens to choose who governs is normal around the world. And it’s a step forward for Italy.” This is Matteo Renzi interviewed by Corriere della Sera. «We had put this in the political program, we don’t change our minds every year – adds the leader of Italia Viva – Whoever says no to the left has changed their mind idea. And the right that started with presidentialism changed its mind. The proposal represents progress, but many issues need to be clarified. Term limits, voting, overcoming bicameralism. And of course I don’t understand why the prime- minister cannot choose and dismiss ministers. We will discuss and present our changes in the Chamber.”
Will you vote in favor? «It depends on the text that comes out – he continues – Our government has produced results that, over time, are also recognized by its opponents: think about the measures for companies, the social laws, the 80 euros. If I lost Palazzo Chigi, then, it was only because the opposition used the referendum against me on constitutional reform. My opponents at the time, from Meloni to Grillo, from Salvini to D’Alema, were not interested in the Constitution: it was enough to get me out of there. And I won’t do to Giorgia what Giorgia did to me because I’m not like them. We are serious. We are ready to vote on constitutional reform, remaining in opposition. However, the vote is not a given: it will depend on the changes that are accepted. We don’t say yes, regardless of what the right does, we don’t say no, regardless of what the broad field does. Let’s improve the text and then decide.”
