“It is necessary to reduce irregular immigration. To achieve this, there will be close collaboration with countries outside the EU. As is now the case with Turkey. But there could be others on the way.” And the agreement on migrants between Rome and Tirana is “first of all a matter between the Italian and Albanian governments”, but “at this moment we must also bear in mind that, in our opinion, Albania will soon become a member of the European Union “. It is German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, asked about the agreement signed between Giorgia Meloni and Edi Rama, who offers unexpected support to the Italian Prime Minister. This is not a political assessment, upon arriving at the PSE congress in Malaga the head of the German government does not go into the merits of the agreement but explains: “We are talking about how to solve challenges and problems together effectively within the European Union family “We will follow the issue closely. What is important now in Europe is to correct things that did not go well, establish a solidarity mechanism and try to overcome this challenge.” But, the chancellor further specifies, “there are no things that cannot be taken into consideration. We must act very pragmatically and, ultimately, very efficiently.”
Agreements such as the one between Italy and Albania that, just this morning, Meloni relaunched through social media are, therefore, also plausible: “A historic agreement to manage the phenomenon of migratory flows and combat trafficking in human beings”, he writes, repeating a passage from his ‘Giorgia Notes’ on the agreement signed with Prime Minister Rama. The latter specifies that it has not been contacted by other countries for a similar agreement, “and we will not be open to any requests – it states – just as we were not open to similar requests before Italy asked us. say no because we owe a debt of gratitude that we can never repay, but that we must never forget”, he continues, saying he is “surprised” by the reaction of the Democratic Party, because “they have the right to oppose and criticize your government , but there is no reason to put socialism and the Albanian executive in the middle.”
Despite Scholz’s words, however, a rejection comes from the PSE: the issue of migration must be managed with a “progressive” formula, and not in the form adopted by the “extreme right-wing government in Italy” which “sends asylum seekers for Albania”, says the president of the European Socialist Party (PES), Stefan Löfven, in his final speech in Malaga. And Elly Schlein also returns to attack the Piazza del Popolo stage. After having stated that “it was a mistake not to change Bossi-Fini when we were in government”, the secretary of the Democratic Party states: “There is no agreement with Albania, because agreements must go through Parliament and we have not seen anything. Maybe because they know it violates the Constitution.” But Scholz, who is certainly not a right-wing extremist, doesn’t think so.
