Interview with Procaccini: “The Democratic Party is isolated in Europe in relation to migrants”

“A paradox has been created in Europe: the agreement between Italy and Albania on immigration has isolated not our government, but the Democratic Party.” The observation made by Nicola Procaccini, co-president of the ECR group in the European Parliament and MEP for the Brothers of Italy, is almost a clear observation.

At the PSE congress, German Chancellor Scholz, a Social Democrat, said he was carefully following the agreement between Rome and Tirana. What sign is this?

«Today, both in the Union and more generally in the European space if we think of the English labor leader Starmer, there is no longer a socialist party that has not become aware of the need to combat illegal immigration more incisively. There is only one exception on the “moderate” left: the Democratic Party, which is in fact pushing, at European level, positions that are more the baggage of the “Left”, the family of the radical left. Furthermore, do you know who is the immigration minister with the most peremptory positions in Europe? It’s the Danish Tesfaye. Left-wing, he has Ethiopian origins.”

While we are on the subject, Denmark also wanted to make a deal with Rwanda for asylum seekers. And it concluded an agreement with Kosovo to send a quota of prisoners from third countries to that country’s prisons. No arrows were heard from the Italian Democratic Party. Maybe they only rise up when they have to attack the Italian government?

“Obviously yes. And I also register a contradictory attitude towards the choices of the recent past also adopted by governments led by the Democratic Party. The line taken by the then Minister of the Interior, Marco Minniti, was rejected by Elly Schlein, embarrassing figures such as Lorenzo Guerini. The idea is that the Democratic Party is now halfway between the social center and the student assembly. The issue of illegal immigration, if not addressed severely, also makes the management of legal immigration impossible.”

Speaking of contradictions. From the stage in Piazza del Popolo, Elly Schlein sent “a hug” to Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who reached an agreement to form a government. Does this not contradict the previous demands of the European left, taking into account the forces with which Sanchez allied?

«Sánchez, despite not having the numbers, because he essentially lost the elections, made agreements with far-right parties. Because in fact the Basque and Catalan parties have that identity. Furthermore, these are parties whose corporate name is the secession of a part of Spain. I therefore find it disconcerting that the vice-president of the European Commission, Gentiloni, has spoken out in favor of this abomination, when a few hours earlier Security Commissioner Rynders had sent a note to the Sanchez government expressing strong doubts regarding the amnesty law, which constitutes the fulcrum of the new government’s agreement.” In short, you define a scenario of short circuit to the left. “Exactly. He oscillates between positions that are ideological and positions of extreme political cynicism when the convenience of neighboring parties is at stake. And the most recent scandal of the European left, which led to the dismissal of one of its main exponents, the head of the Portuguese government António Costa, is also being forgotten. An important figure, among the candidates to occupy the position of President of the EU Council in the next renewal of positions. Nowadays, if we count which European countries are led by the left, we might not even be able to use all the fingers on one hand.”

The vote on the Euro7 regulation in the European Parliament had a majority including Ida Renew. Is this something sporadic or should we look at the issue from a perspective after the European elections?

“For months I have been explaining that, in reality, a new majority has already been formed in the European Parliament on many issues, from a new green deal, less ideological and more reasonable, to the fight against illegal immigration. Forecasts regarding the European elections paint an even more favorable scenario. I read in many left-wing newspapers that the current leadership of community institutions will not move. But I think there’s a good chance that could change. Give it a few months and we’ll see.”

And could a possible new majority also include Renew?

“Certainly some delegations. And there too, as in other European families, there are various sensitivities”.
