In the last few hours, Paola Cortellesi also appealed to Meloni and Schlein to prepare a bipartisan plan to defeat and prevent violence against women. Especially after the Giulia Cecchettin case, there is no more time to waste. Prime Minister Meloni responded quickly by announcing government measures regarding violence against women.
“We all hoped in the last few days that Giulia was alive. Unfortunately, our greatest fears have come true. of the Italian and German Order for their joint work that brought the alleged murderer to justice. Giulia is the 102nd woman killed in Italy in 2023 and the 53rd victim at the hands of her partner or ex. A trail of violence against women that continues for years with numbers even more dramatic than those in the past. Every woman killed for being “guilty” of being free is an aberration that cannot be tolerated and that leads me to continue on the path taken to end this barbarity. It has already been unanimously approved in the Chamber, and next Wednesday it will be in the Senate, our bill to strengthen protection measures for women in danger thanks to greater prevention – alert, electronic bracelet, minimum approach distance – arrest also in “delayed default” and above all through strict deadlines – 20 days – for the Judiciary to assess the risk and apply precautionary measures. We have significantly increased funding for the anti-violence plan and for the protection of women leaving violent situations. An awareness campaign is now ready in schools with the ministers of Equal Opportunities and Family, Culture and Education, as well as a campaign to publicize the free anti-violence number 1522, also through the involvement of the world of sport. But none of this will be of any use if we do not know how to affirm the great truth that, in this painful moment, the father of young Giulia Cecchettin recalled: “True love does not kill”. True love never hurts, only an unhealthy conception of the relationship between man and woman can do it.”
