Gom van Strien will serve as an observer in the first phase of cabinet formation. He has been a member of the PVV Senate for over 12 years.
Wilders calls him “a knowledgeable man with a good understanding of political affairs.” It would also help that Van Strien “does not have a high political profile.”
At the request of the PVV and the consent of the other parties, the scout will investigate what coalitions are possible and what the first meetings with the group leaders should be about. Almost all party leaders accepted the nomination, only Denk’s Van Baarle opposed it.
Chamber President Bergkamp’s announcement:
“I am pleased that there is a scout with a very broad support base,” said Chamber President Bergkamp. He added that Wilders explained that, as a senator, Van Strien was not part of day-to-day politics and therefore had sufficient distance from him.
Bergkamp said it’s helpful for parties to take a day to deal with emotions about the election results. “The advice I just received was constructive.”
confusion, confusion
This morning, VVD Parliamentary Group Chairman Dilan Yeşilgöz announced that her party will not enter the cabinet due to the loss of seats. But we will activate a centre-right cabinet. “We will support constructive suggestions, so this is a form of tolerance.”
Caroline van der Plas (BBB) said she was stunned by this “premature” decision. CDA parliamentary group leader Henri Bontenbal assumes that the formation will not get any easier. PVV boss Wilders later said this was very disappointing.
The formation will consist of three separate phases: the exploratory phase (starting today), the briefing phase (actual negotiations) and the formation phase (calling ministers and secretaries of state).
