One more mess. This is the mark that can be placed on the new controversy launched by the Democratic Party, this time about the failure to expand the protected energy market. Yesterday, Democratic Party Secretary Elly Schlein reacted as follows to the decision taken by the Meloni government: «The Council of Ministers confirmed our fears, namely the choice to say no to the extension of the protected electricity and gas market. It may seem like a technical problem, but it is not. It touches the living flesh of the difficulties of five million families, ten million users.” In fact, according to the Democratic leader, it would be a “Meloni tax” on the accounts. Put this way, it would almost seem like an appropriate slogan. Too bad the problem is more complex than it seems. And Raffaele Fitto, Minister of European Affairs, puts it this way: «We are talking about a rule foreseen in the competition law in 2022, we could have noticed the effects that were not acceptable when that rule was approved at the time». The leader of the Fratelli d’Italia group of deputies, Tommaso Foti, is even more specific: «It would be appropriate for someone to point out to the secretary of the Democratic Party, Elly Schlein, that the end of the protected energy market was among the objectives of the Pnrr, Plan drawn up by Count I and completed by the subsequent “government of the best”. Given the ongoing amnesia that affects her, Schlein will certainly not remember that only the Brothers of Italy did not vote for the Pnrr, while on that occasion the Democratic Party expressed itself in favor of the return to the free market: a decision that only today she discovers is a bad idea.”
Therefore, it is not a political choice by the government. And, in fact, the vice-president of the Council Matteo Salvini hopes to reopen a discussion with the Commission: «I count on dialogue to be able to remedy an error that we found on the table». Throughout the day, however, there have been attempts to unmask the operation to dissociate the Democratic Party from a measure developed during the two governments of which it was part. «I find it incredible that the Democratic Party is pretending about the end of the protected energy market. This is a Pnrr point also voted by the Democratic Party and negotiated by Democratic Undersecretary Vincenzo Amendola, then with the delegation for EU Affairs”, says League senator Claudio Borghi, who then adds a passage in line with Salvini: “We hope that the government can obtain, at the end of discussions with an expired EU Commission, the zealous extension expected by millions of families, to complete another legacy signed by the PD”.
Then, a potential ally arrives to undermine the Democrat’s position, namely the leader of Action Carlo Calenda, who attacks: «The PD’s position in the protected market is an unacceptable exploitation – he observes -. The end of the protected market is a reform of the Pnrr also voted by the Democratic Party and predicted by Mario Draghi. Opposition like this accomplishes nothing. We are not the collective of a secondary school in the historic center. Together with Schlein’s generic “no” to nuclear energy, it confirms that the Democratic Party does not have a government line. Generic green invocations and denunciation of lobbies. Basically, old-fashioned 5-star.”
