Cervinia changes name: “Fascist”. FdI: decision “out of time” and against tourism

Cervinia, the well-known Italian ski resort, belonging to the municipality of Valtournenche, changes its name. The reason? The name dates back to the fascist era and will therefore be replaced by the original Le Breuil, of French origin. In 1934, Benito Mussolini’s regime took the initiative to Italianize the names of towns and cities located a few kilometers from the border with other states. The decision was taken last April by the City Council, which approved the dossier on renaming villages, towns and localities in its territory from the president of the Aosta Valley Region, Renzo Testolin.

The choice of the regional government came after the previous Valtournenche municipal council, led by mayor Jean-Antoine Maquignaz, asked the region to consider the possibility of recognizing the village’s original name. The regional council took note of the decision on September 12th and, a few days later, the decree was signed. The case, however, triggered the affair and generated discontent. The repercussions on tourism could be very serious, especially since all signage is also expected to change.

“Clear dissent” was expressed by Fratelli d’Italia who, in a note, wrote: “We express deep astonishment and dismay, since the Cervinia brand is known in Italy and throughout the world and such a drastic change is the clear result of a change The ideology of time, space and place can only harm the hotel and tourism sector and the image of the entire Aosta Valley”, declared Alberto Zucchi, regional coordinator of the Aosta Valley of Fratelli d’Italia and deputy Matteo Rosso.
