Synthetic meat, Mattarella signs the bill. Now the EU analysis

The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, promulgated the bill that contains “Provisions relating to the prohibition of the production and placing on the market of food and feed consisting of, isolated or produced from cultures of cells or tissues from vertebrate animals, as well as as a ban on the denomination of meat for processed products containing vegetable proteins”. The Government – we read in the Quirinale note – sent the provision that accompanied it with a letter notifying the notification of the draft law to the European Commission and with the commitment to comply with any observations that could be made by the Commission within the scope of the notification procedure.

“We have just received a new notification. We received it this morning, so we have not yet done our analysis”, announced European Commission spokeswoman Johanna Bernsel at the daily press conference. EU Spokesperson – will be reviewed on its merits independently of the legislative process, because compatibility with EU law is not affected by the procedure. Regarding notification deadlines, the obligation is to notify draft laws and, as I understand it, this legislation has not yet become applicable in Italy. Therefore, I can only confirm the principle that draft laws must be notified so that no legislation becomes applicable in a Member State, in contradiction with Community law.”
