The mere suggestion of seeing Mario Draghi at the head of the European Commission was enough to reunite the left. And so, from the Democratic Party to +Europa, passing through Action and Italia viva, applause. On the other hand, the EU’s “kingmaker” is once again Emmanuel Macron, who after playing Ursula von der Leyen’s card, now has the former ECB president’s card up his sleeve. Which, through nearby sources, already makes it known that he is not interested. A different response is unthinkable, more than six months after the elections. In any case, Carlo Calenda already boasts: “He has the auctoritas, the dignitas and the experience to make the EU take the leap in quality it needs.” Italia viva says yes to Draghi with Davide Faraone: «We are here». Sandro Gozi, MEP and secretary of the European Democratic Party, is also in the chorus: «Draghi can play any top role in Europe with great authority».
For Riccardo Magi, «his leadership would be the best guarantee for following the path necessary for the relaunch of Europe». And the center-right? The only voice recorded so far is that of Antonio Tajani, who without hesitation interrupts Draghi’s hypothesis. «The PPE will confirm the candidacy of Ursula Von Der Leyen» declares the secretary of Forza Italia. However, Macron’s maneuvers and interactions with Olaf Scholz, in Germany, put the consolidation of the Paris-Berlin axis back on track to prepare “the trap for Giorgia Meloni”. This is how Luigi Bisignani described the scenario in our columns less than two weeks ago, anticipating, as he usually does, more or less suggestive contexts that then materialized.
Right now, the most likely coalition to govern the EU in 2024 appears to be made up of people from the People’s Party, Socialists and Liberals. A reversal of the trend towards sovereignist groups could change the current European balance. There are many boxes that will have to fit in the right place. Among other things, there is talk of von Der Leyen as head of NATO. And it is also worth remembering that von der Leyen herself has already commissioned Draghi to prepare a report on the future of European competitiveness.
