As of July 1, 2024, drivers of electric commercial vehicles will continue to need a truck license. This was announced by outgoing Infrastructure Minister Harbers. An exception or tolerance rule currently applies to them.
Commercial vehicles are not trucks, but they fall into this category due to their weight. They weigh more than 3,500 kilos. A truck driver’s license is required for this.
This is a setback for entrepreneurs and companies because it is expensive to obtain the truck license yourself or pay employees to do it.
New cost item
Harbers finds it frustrating that entrepreneurs investing in sustainable transportation now have to deal with new costs. However, he believes that it is undesirable to allow a legally uncertain situation to exist.
He also believes that, in the interest of road safety, it is right that drivers of heavier vehicles are also tested on their driving ability.
