Atreju’s three-day event at Castel Sant’Angelo has just ended, but the controversial consequences promise to last a long time. In particular, the conflict between Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Democratic Party Secretary Elly Schlein shows no signs of abating. A duel that, among other results, manages to split the – in itself fragile – opposition axis. Schlein reproaches Meloni for putting on “a third-rate show” with “subversive” guests who would like to hang the Spanish Prime Minister by his feet”, in a reference to Vox leader Abasca. Meloni counterattacks with a Moretian quote referring to Schlein’s refusal to participate in the event: «You notice me more if…». Added to this is the new confrontation at Rai, triggered by the live broadcast of the Prime Minister’s closing speech at the Brothers of Italy party which, for the democrats, would have “undermined democracy”. Seventy minutes in which Maloni “raised his voice to incite the public against migrants who board boats”, accuses Schlein, “and did not even find a word for the 61 people who drowned in yesterday’s shipwreck, which none of the four countries warned by Frontex (including Italy) intervened to help”. Meloni’s response was not long in coming: «I don’t know what speech the leader of the Democratic Party heard, but I think it is quite clear that talking about the fight against human traffickers human rights, to defend European borders, to give a real, structural and final decision on illegal immigration, has nothing to do with “inciting the public against migrants”.
While the two leaders are busy dueling, the 5 Star Movement is studying the strategy to reopen the ESM game with the prime minister. Not that Giuseppe Conte changed his mind: «Meloni will vote for the MEE. With the Democratic Party, Italia viva and Forza Italia”, says the former prime minister. However, he attacks the newspaper again with the printout of the email sent by the then minister Di Maio to the ambassadors in Brussels and, above all, the accusation made against former Prime Minister Conte of having given the green light to the agreement on the reform of the ESM « secretly.” And so, the president of M5s calls a press conference to be broadcast live because, he said last night, “I have important news to share”. The important news is that the 5 Star Movement is asking for the activation of a jury of honor on what it considers to be “lies” told by Meloni in the Chamber. “I have just delivered to President Fontana a request for the creation of a jury of honor” in accordance with the rules of the Chamber of Deputies, to “investigate the denigrating lies of Prime Minister and deputy Giorgia Meloni” about the MEE, said Conte during the press conference. “It is conduct that harmed the honor of a single deputy, of my entire group, harmed and continues to harm Italy and humiliates Parliament. It is a precedent that cannot be passed on the sly,” he added, contradicting Meloni.
From the Democratic Party, the movements of the potential ally are being observed, with the suspicion that this is a way of not leaving the entire scene in the hands of Meloni and Schlein. In fact, the barbs that Conte reserved for the Democratic leader during his conference have not been forgotten. «Center-left Federer Schlein? In the meantime, the currents of the Democratic Party federate, the M5 do not need to be federated.” When questioned, the Nazareno shows that he does not want to engage in a new confrontation with his ally, or assumed such: «We are committed to fighting Meloni and his government, we are not responding to Giuseppe Conte’s attacks. No words against the opposition ever came from Schlein, but she was always careful to find a stake in the issues, as she did with the minimum wage, having the responsibility to look to the first opposition party.” In short, Schlein and Conte are in full communication difficulties in search of lost media visibility.
