Sergio Mattarella promulgated the annual market and competition law, but in a letter to the presidents of the Chambers and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni he asked for quick corrections to the rules relating to street vendors. On December 30th, the Head of State signed the bill definitively approved by the Chamber before Christmas, a fundamental text for fulfilling the criteria that guaranteed Brussels’ yes to the Pnrr funds, so crucial that they made the number one from Quirinale a “warning” yes. But the excessive length of the extension for traders already holding concessions, defined as “excessive and disproportionate”, led the President to put pen to paper to request corrections to the law, with a long explanation to the Chambers and the Executive.
The League’s voice comes from the majority which, in a note where no explicit reference is made to Mattarella, makes it clear: the party is committed «as it has been for years, even in recent days, to guaranteeing the rights and future of the thousands of workers and entrepreneurs in street commerce and the coastal sector. We will not give up on those who, in the name of Europe, tried to sell the work and sacrifices of thousands of Italians.”
There are few other comments among the center-right ranks, where caution prevails at this time, it is explained. Riccardo Zucconi, secretary of the Presidency of the Chamber, speaks at Fratelli d’Italia and notes that «it is always useful and timely to listen to the observations of the President of the Republic with due respect and due consideration and this obviously also applies to recent concessions state ». Having said this, Zucconi is keen to highlight that «the Meloni government intervened with seriousness and respect for national and European regulations, in the meantime correcting some regulatory disparities that had been created in the field of street commerce, a sector unfortunately objectively in crisis». As for seaside resorts, “the government has finally acted in full compliance with the Bolkestein directive”, and “a comprehensive proposal” will arrive “soon” which will be accompanied by “a full discussion with the European Commission”. Therefore, concludes the FdI exponent, «we accept President Mattarella’s invitation to continue working even outside of controversies and exploitations that certainly do not benefit our country». Even for the Italian Maurizio Gasparri «it is necessary to discuss Mattarella’s letter in Parliament, «but we must also remember that competition is changed by Amazon and not by the newsstands that close more and more day after day».
