“I will not run for the European Parliament.” The words of the European Commissioner for the Economy, Paolo Gentiloni, are clear, responding to a question from a Politico journalist about his possible appointment to European positions. “I would like to return to my country”, explained the former Italian Prime Minister, joking about the fact that he has no intention of retiring. And the measure does not surprise anyone, given that the idea of focusing on Gentiloni as a federator of the left, giving the endorsement to Elly Schlein in the event of a failed result in the European elections, has been circulating for months within the Democratic Party.
Gentiloni, interviewed by Sky Tg24, also expressed his opinion about the MEE: «The lack of trust is a very old story that certainly did not arise with the MEE. There are different conditions, countries that have very low debt levels and that initially were not so determined to embark on the single currency adventure. This difference in real interests – he continued – remains. Let us not exaggerate in attributing all this importance to the case of the MEE. It is certain, however, that we are part of a club of 20 countries that give life to this body in which it was decided to make a change to the statute. Another 19 will not be happy that Italy has decided not to do so. But Parliament is sovereign. I hope a way can be found to resolve the issue in the coming months.”
