Police unions against Deputy Minister Bignami (Fdi): “He called us incompetent”

At the meeting held in Forli on January 17 between Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, there was a discussion on the management of public order. The National Association of Police Authorities accused the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Galeazzo Bignami (the representative of the Brotherhood of Italy in Emilia Romagna), of trying to limit the protests against the Prime Minister, accusing the police authorities of being incompetent in not stopping.

During the meeting, a group of people had gathered under the town hall to peacefully demonstrate against the government. According to Anfp secretary Enzo Marco Letizia, undersecretary Bignami “just before the personalities arrived, he recklessly protested to the director of the public order organization because, in his opinion, the troublemakers were allowed to demonstrate near the city hall, blaming those responsible for the lack of public order”. “Such behavior, we read in the note published on the Anfp website, raises important questions regarding the right to freedom of expression, civic participation and responsibility for public order.”

Accusations against FdI undersecretary: “Attempt to restrict freedom of assembly”

The note, written by Enzo Marco Letizia, continues with some considerations regarding the freedom to peacefully demonstrate, which “is a fundamental right in modern democracies and represents an important pillar of civic participation.” “We read that the actions and views of the Undersecretary may arise and/or be interpreted as an attempt to limit this fundamental right, especially considering the peaceful nature of the demonstration and the public importance of the flood victims.”

The National Association of Police Officers then underlines that “under existing legislation, security must be understood not as a limitation of freedoms, but as a means of protecting them,” and therefore “We are very saddened by the behavior of Undersecretary Bignami,” we read. I’m very confused.”
