A harsh note from the League against European Commissioner Paolo Gentiloni. During the opening of the academic year at the University of Brescia, the former prime minister addressed several topics, but the offensive passage that provoked the Northern League protests concerned European citizenship. For Gentiloni “the construction of European citizenship continues to be a fundamental challenge if we do not want to return to a Europe of small homelands and the return of nationalism”. And “the concept of European citizenship integrates, without replacing it, the concept of Italian citizenship. Put this way, it’s easy, but it’s a unique experience in the world that requires continuous attention. Over these three decades – continued the European Commissioner – this concept of European citizenship has been endowed with many implementation instruments of great importance”.
A departure that, for many, would not be casual, but rather the prelude to a possible return after Schlein. Gentiloni recalls the freedom of movement within the Schengen area, the freedom to reside and work in the various EU territories, social and consumer rights, common programs such as those linked to the world of Education, Erasmus or Horizonte. To then highlight how «the process of building a European demos is more tiring, we often continue to talk about a Europe of the peoples, it is more difficult to talk about a European people». Then he quotes Massimo D’Azeglio: “one could say that, once Europe was made, it would be a matter of making Europeans. I believe that we are still facing an incomplete citizenship.”
For the League “the European commissioner thinks of a continent hostage to multinationals and indifferent to workers’ protests, starting with fishermen and farmers”. A concept also reinforced by the Northern League deputy, Rossano Sasso. «Not that there was a need, but the dem commissioner, very European and not very Italian, Gentiloni definitively clarified what the final objective of the left is: the cancellation of identity, of prerogatives, of sensitivity to the homeland in the name of a phantom European citizenship that should replace national “small homelands”. That is why the Democratic Party in Europe is complicit in the atrocities that the EU perpetrates against Italians, our farmers, our artisans and, finally, also our teachers.” For Sasso, “a Europe like this harms Italy and Gentiloni will realize this in June, when, thanks to the vote of the Italians, Matteo Salvini and the center-right will be able to contribute to designing a new Europe with the European right. A Europe of the Peoples that values small homelands and does not humiliate them, like the left would like to continue doing so», concluded the League deputy.
