EU, the possibility of seeing Draghi at the head of the Council is ignored: the reason

The president of the EU Council, Charles Michel, publicly announced that he has decided not to run in the next European elections. A turning point just weeks after his previous announcement, in which he expressed his intention to run for a seat in the European Parliament next June. The former Belgian Prime Minister justified his resignation by declaring that he intends to dedicate all his efforts to his current responsibilities with firm determination until their completion. He also underlined his commitment to always be a fervent defender of a Europe that is democratic, strong, united and capable of determining its own destiny. Michel also anticipated that, at the end of his current term, he will reflect on the nature and direction of his future commitments.

Michel’s early resignation, announced on January 9, kicked off negotiations over top positions in Brussels. From the beginning, the name of former Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi emerged as one of the main candidates for the presidency of the European Council. However, sources close to the 76-year-old former ECB governor, interviewed by La7, indicate that Draghi may not be interested in occupying any leadership position in Brussels. Even if we wanted to, right now the plan is blocked by Michel’s inversion.
